Cusco – Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu

The tour begins early in the morning when our team picks you up from your hotel in Cusco and takes you to the Ollantaytambo train station. This journey takes about 2 hours, after which you’ll board the train to the picturesque town of Aguas Calientes, a ride of approximately 2 more hours. Upon arrival, our guide will welcome you and transfer you by bus to the entrance of Machu Picchu, a 30-minute uphill ride.

Once at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary, the entry control will be completed and the guided tour will begin, lasting approximately 2 hours. During this visit, you’ll stop at the most impressive viewpoints and take amazing photos of the citadel and surrounding mountains. After the tour, you’ll return to Aguas Calientes to enjoy a delicious lunch in the town.

In the afternoon, depending on your train schedule, we’ll take the return train to Ollantaytambo. Once there, private transportation will take you back to Cusco, where we’ll drop you off at your hotel.

How early does the tour start and end?

Pickup in Cusco is around 4:00–5:00 AM. You will return to Cusco in the evening, usually between 7:00–8:00 PM, depending on train availability.

What happens if it rains at Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is open rain or shine. We recommend bringing a light rain jacket or poncho, especially during the rainy season (November to March).

Are children allowed on the tour?

Yes, children can join the tour. We recommend kids be at least 6 years old, as the terrain requires walking and supervision.

Is there altitude sickness risk?

Cusco is located at 3,400 m (11,152 ft), but Machu Picchu is lower at 2,430 m (7,972 ft). Most travelers feel better at Machu Picchu, but we still recommend:

  • Drinking coca tea or water
  • Walking slowly
  • Avoiding heavy meals before the trip

Are professional guides included?

Yes, a licensed professional guide will accompany you at Machu Picchu. Our guides are bilingual (English/Spanish) and trained in Andean history and culture.

Can I store luggage during the tour?

Large luggage cannot be taken into Machu Picchu. You can leave your bigger bags at your Cusco hotel or in secure storage in Aguas Calientes. Bring only a small backpack.

Is travel insurance included?

No, travel insurance is not included. We highly recommend travelers purchase personal travel insurance before their trip.
