Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to visit Cusco and Machu Picchu?

The best time is during the dry season (April to October). Days are sunnier, making it ideal for visiting archaeological sites. However, if you prefer fewer crowds, traveling in the shoulder months (April–May or September–October) is recommended.

Will altitude sickness affect me?

Cusco is located at 3,400 m.a.s.l. and altitude sickness can occur. To minimize effects:

  • Rest upon arrival and avoid heavy meals.
  • Drink coca tea, a traditional remedy.
  • Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol the first day.

Machu Picchu is at a lower altitude (2,430 m.a.s.l.), so symptoms are usually less intense there.

Can I visit Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain?

Yes, but you must purchase the entrance ticket in advance as availability is limited. Each hike offers different views:

  • Huayna Picchu: Steep hike, approx. 2 hours, panoramic views.
  • Machu Picchu Mountain: Less steep, longer (3 hours), broader perspectives.

How do I get from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu?

You will take the shuttle bus included in the package. The ride takes about 30 minutes from Aguas Calientes to the entrance gate of Machu Picchu.

What should I pack for this trip?

Bring clothing for both warm days and cold nights. Essentials include:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Layered clothing (t-shirts, fleece, jacket)

What are the hotels like?

The package includes 2 nights in Cusco and 1 night in Aguas Calientes, all in comfortable hotels with breakfast. Upgrades to luxury hotels are available upon request.

Meals not specified (like lunch in Aguas Calientes) are excluded.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes, highly recommended. Travel insurance should cover medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and adventure activities such as trekking.

Is the Humantay Lake trek difficult?

It is a moderate trek. The hike lasts around 1.5–2 hours uphill, at an altitude of 4,200 m.a.s.l. We recommend being in good physical condition and acclimatizing in Cusco before the trek.

What currency is used in Peru?

The local currency is the Peruvian Sol (PEN). In Cusco and Aguas Calientes, US dollars are also accepted in many establishments. We recommend carrying some Soles for local markets and small purchases.

Can I use credit cards during the trip?

Yes, Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in Cusco and Aguas Calientes. However, in remote areas (such as Chinchero or Maras), cash is necessary.

What documents do I need to enter Machu Picchu?
